Aviation Security: Suspicious people

Image
Just last year was a difficult time for commercial airlines. When covid hit the number of passengers dropped and some airlines paused flights all together. Late last year things started opening back up. Now we have a new issue on top of what already exist in general aviation. People forgot how to act in public. Using the sixth sign of terrorism, Suspicious people, we can see how TSA aims to remedy the issue (TSA Information Publication A-001, Version 2 July 2017).  With health concerns and emotions raging many parts of the TSA layers are in over time. imagine being 30,000ft in the air and a fight breaks out over trivial matters. While in itself it might not constitute a real threat, it may give place for a threat to occur. If the fight breaks out there could be another passenger waiting for an opportunity to strike. Even with no screened weapons almost any object can be used as a weapon. Just moment can pass and a hostage situation can take place. With 20 layers at work to prevent ...

Carburetor system- 3.2: Aircraft systems in flight

Image
Among the many systems on an aircraft to offer it the ability to fly there is the carburetor system. Mainly used on smaller aircraft the carburetor is an integral peace of the whole fuel system (aircraft systems 05, 2016.YouTube). The carburetor is a mechanism used in many small engine vehicles. When it comes to an aircraft equipped with a carburetor a major downfall can happen. As picture depicts, Carbs are prone to icing when there is a mixture of cool temperature and humidity (PHAK 7-8). Icing can actually happen in decently high temperatures. If the aircraft in use is driven solely by a carburetor mixing the fuel and oxygen and icing occurs tragedy can happen. It can cause misfires all the way up to starving the engine of fuel thus resulting in engine failure.       The main two mitigation factors to use are 1. Using exhaust heat to keep the carb warm and 2. Simply upgrade to fuel injection systems (PHAK 7-8). When it comes to keeping the carb...

Atmospheric pressure

Atmospheric Pressure in Aviation  July,14,2022   Air has weight and thickness. Right at 14.7 psi. Just like everything else, what goes up must come down. This is all dependent on temperature and altitude. Temperature falls at 3.5 degrees Fahrenheit for every 1,000 feet in altitude until 36,000 feet. Similarly air density will decrease by 1Hg for every 1,000 feet until 10,000 feet.  (PHAK chapter 11-2). This seems like a simple concept at first, but as we dive into it the more complex it becomes. The temperature and density of air is totally different on the surface than FL300. For us this may cause ear popping but what does it mean for our aircraft? There are three main effects on an aircraft as it ascends in altitude. All three issues are a result of the air thinning as you fly higher. The performance an aircraft has on the ground will be drastically different than high above ground level. Your power, thrust, and lift will all suffer due to thin air in high altitudes (PH...

Ethics in Aviation

Image
Ethics in aviation July 8 2022  Ethics is defined as a set of morals (Merriam-Webster). When trying to relate ethics into aviation I also had to see the definition of the word “Morals” for a more firm grasp. Morals means to express or teach the concept of right behavior. Adding them together paints the picture. To have a set of doctrines or concepts of right behavior. When one speaks of ethics and morals we generally turn our minds to good and bad or right and wrong. Aviation has its own version of  Right and wrong. In normal life cases character ethics and work ethics are two different things. In Aviation they are one in the same.   When it comes to all things aviation every decision, no matter how small, holds a tremendous weight. Everything from weather and flight plans, to aircraft walk around and preflight. To have good ethics in aviation means to do the job by the book every time that you perform. Becoming complacent and letting yourself cut corners could...
